Causes of user frustration in web design

Web Design | on Apr. 18, 2011 | by 1 Comments

Clients and users of websites are vulnerable to frustrations depending on the nature of the website they are visiting. It is important to know the major causes of frustrations in web design before proceeding with the design.

It is unfortunate that some web designers include a lot of irrelevant information in their site. Clients are distracted by the information and they may have a problem searching for the information they need. Users will be agitated because they are unable to access quality information. Insufficient information in your site could also easily frustrate clients. Users usually look for sites that have enough information on the topics of their interest. Ensuring that your site has content that was researched on exhaustively will overlook this possible problem.

Loading speed of the site should not be slow. When designing the website, you should remember that there is a lot of variation in accessibility to internet. Some people are able to get high speed internet connection while others survive on low speed internet. It is your responsibility to ensure that your site is light enough to be accessed by all people comfortably. This can be done by customizing your site in a special way for example by the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

CSS uses small files compared to other platforms making your site relatively light such that it can be accessed by people with all types of internet connection fast. Importance of CSS can also not be overemphasized when tables, images and graphics have been used in the site. These elements increase the bandwidth of a site incredibly and could lower the loading speed. CSS curbs this problem by reducing the file sizes of these elements. Users need to be assured that they can access your site from anywhere using any browser. It is therefore important to ensure that your site is compatible with all the major browsers. There are many tools for instance templates that help web designers achieve this objective.

Annoying features is the major cause of frustrations to users. They may include bad contrast which is attributed to using colours blindly. Good site contrast is ensured by use of alternating dark and bright colours. In this case, if the background of the site is bright, the elements used in the site should be dark coloured. You should not use more than three different colours because they may present a problem to most clients. You site should also not have too many popup windows and background noises because most people do not like them.

Disorganized sites will discourage clients from visiting the site. Users are always confident of sites that are well organized and everything arranged logically. Modern tools like CSS, HTML and JavaScript can of great help in assuring this.  These applications will provide the platform to organize and provide easy accessibility to key elements of the site. Frustration can cause you to lose valuable traffic so it is important to make sure your visitor is satisfied. Taking care of the above factors will ensure user satisfaction and pave way for success for your site.
